Step 6: Reflect

We have reached the end of our reflection through objects. The objective of this final step is to reflect on and distill the learning that emerged during collaboration with other students, and also to prepare possible opportunities for sharing the project.

This session is conceived as the closing and farewell of the working group, but we recommend carrying it out as a plenary session with the full class, in which all working groups can share the projects carried out and reflect together.

Duration: 30 Minutes

Materials:

  • Finished final project.
  • Shared work logbook.

Step by step instructions:

  1. During the last meeting, the working group looks at the result of the project and reflects on the findings that emerged during the work process.
  2. Afterward, hold a closing conversation, guiding reflection through the following questions:
    • What did I learn about the object? What did I learn through the object?
    • What local themes emerged in the reflection around this object?
    • What global themes emerged in the reflection around this object?
    • What other new themes could be explored through objects?

"I made a point of observing chairs during my daily walks, which made me pay close attention to their details. I noticed that their shapes were uninteresting and generic. This led me to think that we've become disconnected from craftsmanship in the utilitarian objects of our daily lives. What would the chairs in my home look like if I were to transform them with symbols and colors?"

Lau

"The chair is one of the most diverse and accessible objects in the world, because it fulfills a basic need: rest. Its materials, construction, and proportions reflect economic, social, and gender contexts. This allows us to raise key questions, such as: How, where, and why do we sit? And what kinds of chairs do we have access to?"

Cristi

"There was a question that seemed simple: is it a utilitarian object or a ritual one? The quick answer was “utilitarian”—and it is—but why dismiss the idea of a ritual of sitting? Isn’t sitting at a particular time on a favorite chair a ritual in itself?"

Alli

"This particular chair is defined by multiple elements that set it apart from others of its kind. The engraved figures on its back, its delicate forms, and its distinctive colors and textures all carry meaning. A chair can speak to who someone was, their life story, and their needs."
